To answer your question Alyssa, I have a lot of favorite smells. I like the smell of my family's kitchen. My father is a great cook, and he's always making something delicious. I like the smell of fresh-cut grass because it reminds me of running around outside in the spring and summer. The smell of cinnamon reminds me of my grandmother. She used to make me cinnamon toast all the time. Smells can really help us remember people and places, don't you think?

This has been a great discussion so far! It's interesting to read your ratings of Bud. I'm not sure what rating I would give him. I have to admit—I sort of like the guy. Let me ask you this: Do you think Bud is lost? Why, or why not? What do you think he will do next?

Hi,
I think that Bud is going to find his dad in the end of the book, don't you?
I think that Bud has learned a lot about families, I think that he has learned that they are loving and caring and that they share their things and give you a warm feeling. But I think that Bud has not had that feeling in a long time.
I really hope that he finds his dad in the end.
What do any of you think what Bud has learned about families?

Hi,

Some themes in the book is racism, opportunity, family and there also is hunger.I arrived at the racism theme at the part when the police officers were whacking the blackmen, that's just mean. I also came across the theme of poverty when Bud was just walking down the street when someone in a black car pulled up next to him and said do you want some food or a drink. People would line up for hours just to get food.

If I were to rate this book I would rate this a 10. I like Cristopher Paul Curtis' style of writing - how he gives such good description and how Bud can take care of himself. Why do you think Bud won't stop looking for his dad. I think it was hysterical when Bud thinks Mr.Lewis is a vampire and puts the car into drive and then Mr.Lewis tells Bud he isn't a vampire because vampires can't drive. Mr.Lewis then drives him to his house and asks him what he is doing in the Grand Rapids and Buds says, " I'm looking for my father", and Mr.Lewis says," Who's your dad, son?" "Herman.E.Callaway ", says Bud. Write back sorry that it is so long. Bye
