Hi,
I argee I also like the part where his pretend family took Bud into the mission like they were his family.
I think Bud had a good feeling inside like he was loved.
Do you think that's how Bud felt?

Lindsay,I think Mr.Calloway is Bud's grandpa because he collects rocks and puts dates on them just like Bud. What do you think about my opinion?

Hi. Did you ever think that Mr.Calloway was Bud's grandpa?Or that Bud's mom was Mr.C's daughter? Our teacher suggested it and so I wasn't surprised when he really was.

I thought that it was a cool idea for the auther to put in the book. Do you?

Hello! What should we talk about today? Whatever you want--that's what we should talk about!

At one point in the story, Bud hears Herman E. Calloway saying that "There comes a time when you're doing something and you realize it just doesn't make sense to keep on doing it . . .you understand, enough is enough." How does Bud feel when he hears this? Why?

Oh, Carmen and I want to make sure that you understand that it's OK to disagree with people on the message board sometimes. Sometimes that's part of having a book discussion. When we asked that the rude remarks stop, we didn't mean that people couldn't politely disagree. Just wanted to be clear. On with the discussion!

I think that Bud is lucky to have found his grandpa (Herman E. Calloway) because he has at last found some of his kin/family. Are you glad that he found some of his kin? What do you think will happen to their relationship?

Good detective work! I like that you're using clues in the story to try to figure out if Herman is Bud's father. I don't know what I think about the whole situation yet. Guess I'll have to keep reading! What does everyone else think?

I kind of agree with you that I don't like the way Bud always says shucks. But I also kind of don't agree with you because I think that shucks is just a word that people say, especially at this time in history. Also because everyone probally says shucks once in a while.
This part of my letter is to anyone. I think Herman E. Calloway really is Bud's father, and that Bud will get to know his Herman, and his father will get to know him. Also I think that if Bud keeps on hanging out with his father his father will learn to be nicer than he his right now. What do you think?

Raoul, a challenge that Bud faces is lack of food. The setting relates to the challenge because it was the time of the great depression, where pretty much everybody was poor. Also because he is a orphan who before now had no one to give him food, I mean he didn't know, at the resturant, that he could order whatever he wanted off the menu.

What do you think?

Good morning from northern Michigan. My discussion group is enjoying the book and the excellent, interesting, thought-provoking comments many of you have shared. However, we would like to protest the misuse of this discussion board by some of those involved in the current discussion. Participation in this group is a privilege and is definitely NOT an opportunity to cyber-chat, insult other students, or waste time.

Secondly, we do not appreciate finding poor quality comments posted bearing the name of our school. There are numerous comments on the board bearing the names of students that do NOT attend out school. And while anyone can make a mistake, or forget to change the school, there are far too many of them for this excuse to be plausible. Just to set the record straight, there are NO sixth graders, NO Sesame Street characters, and NO comic book superheroes among our student body. At Sheridan Elementary, our discussion group members are required to have a teacher approve their comments before they are sent, and in the past, students have been removed from our book club group for posting inappropriate remarks. We take this very seriously, folks.

Please show ALL book club participants your respect and your intellect!!! We want to know what you think about the book! Christopher Paul Curtis is one of our favorite children's authors, and since this is the first time Bud, Not Buddy has been part of the Small Planet line-up, we are very interested in a good discussion. For most of us, this was the first time we read the book, and we found that we just couldn't stop reading once we began!

To those of you that are making thoughtful, meaningful comments, THANK YOU!!! Keep up the great work. To the rest of you, we beg you, please reach for higher quality and use the book club for the wonderful learning tool it was meant to be.

What chapter are you on?I'm on chapter 11.I like the part when Bud drives the car.It seemed funny because he doesn't know how to drive and you are wondering what Mr.Lewis will say when Bud tells him why he drove away and what he will say next.I also thought when Bud told Mr.Lewis why he drove off and made him show Bud his teeth was funny.Write back.

Do you think Herman. E Calloway is really Bud's dad?
I do, because why else would Bud keep all of those flyers of him? Although they could be one of Bud's other relatives.

welcome him so much? The band members are nice and caring.I think they welcome him because they must know how he feels. Herman treats Bud so badly they feel sorry for him.

Hi,
Thanks for sending me!
I will send you whenever I can!
I do think that Bud will see Deza again in seven years just like Deza said when they were saying good bye.
What do you think?
Do you think Herman Calloway is Bud's father?
I don't because Lefty Lewis says that Herman has a full grown girl and I don't think he would have a 20 year old and a 10 year old even if he had 2 or 3 wives.
Why do you think Bud's mother kept the flyers?
How far have you read?
I have read to chapter 13.
I think Lefty Lewis is mean because he keeps making fun of Bud saying he is puny.
Write back. Thanks.

It's Jenn responding back to U. I am on chapter 11 too! I think that we should respond to eachother daily, kind of like pen pals over the internet. I think that it was kind of akward that he got picked up by Lefty Lewis because it is almost like hitchhiking. What do U think will happen at the end of the story?

Hi Amanda
Yes I think that Bud will find his father. What do you think that Bud means when he says that he is carrying his momma inside of his.I think that he means he is carrying his mother's heart inside of him. What do you think? What do you think that the most interesting details in Bud's new room are?I think that the many pictures of horses in the wall are very interesting to Bud. The drawings of the horses on the lamp shade and the picture of the girl on a horse! What do you think? What Chapter are you on? Wrtie me back soon because we are finished on the computer tomorrow (Friday).

Hello book club people

I think that Herman E. Calloway has not warmed uo to Bud the way the others have because he dose not want to admit that they are related in some way. My favourite member of the band is Steady Eddie because he sounds like a very nice person and he plays the sax and so do I.

I think Lefty Lewis is just someone who is trying to take Bud away or is trying to take him away somewhere like back to the home. I think Herman E Calaway is just a old fried of Bud's or something.

Dear Emily,

I am delighted to know that your teacher monitors your comments. Thank you for sharing that with us -- that's the way book club is meant to work! Student input + teacher supervision = quality discussion. (I bet that equation doesn't appear in any math book you've studied.) And please understand that many, many book club participants are making wonderful comments. My students are enjoying communicating with those people, like yourself, who take the discussion seriously. Thank you very much for your efforts and great comments!

Dear Andrew,

Thank you for correcting me. You are absolutely correct that I violated a rule of our "Netiquette" when I used multiple exclamation points. Please accept my sincere apology for the oversight. It was not my intention to offend anyone or to violate our rules of discussion, but rather to stress the importance of a meaningful discussion. My students and I just love book club, and this is the second year we've participated. So we were very disappointed, for example, to see so many silly comments to and from imaginary characters, professional wrestlers, etc. Still, there is no excuse for having violated "netiquette" in my previous comment, and I hope you will forgive me. We look forward to more great discussion with you, your classmates, and the other schools represented here!
