MESSAGE:
I think that the book so far has been very exciting, interesting, and interesting facts about the Revolutionary War. I also think that the point of view from a young boy going to war was an interesting plot. I predict that this is going to be a great book. |

MESSAGE:
Dear Dylan and Mike, In my class we have been to the point were Jonathan has gone to the battle. I think that Jonathan is really scared out there on the fighting ground. If they wanted a thirteen year old boy they should have never left him alone. He must be really hungry and lonsome. I think he should of never disobeyed his parents. I hope that the Hessians help him out what do you think? Sincerely, Tamera |

MESSAGE:
Dear Readers, We think the "fighting ground" is a half a mile away from Rocktown. The battle was on the highest point there. A quote from the book is "Jonathon could see where the road ran south and climbed again. At the highest point a little way beyond was Rocktown, where they were going to fight." As they were walking it was very quiet, and Jonathan could see that a BIG strom was coming fast. He could not even hear any birds, and no one was talking. There was not even the smallest hint of a breeze. It was very, very still and quiet. Marissa T. & Jessica T. |

MESSAGE:
Dear Readers, I feel that Jonathan felt scared about disobeying his father. He was thinking about how his father said not to go to the war and he did anyway. Jonathan got so worked up he became dehydrated. When the Hessians were coming up for the battle, his heart was pounding at sound of the drums. Do you think Jonahtan will ever shoot anybody?

MESSAGE:
We like the book so far. We think that Jonathan was naughty for leaving to go to war. We also think that Jonathan just wants to feel older. Also Jonathan probaby felt like he was the only one not fighting. His brother was there, his cousin was there and his dad had been there. What do you think Jonathans father will do to him once he gets home? Do you think that Jonathan is having second thoughts about going to war,and would you want to go to war if you had the chance? Lauren thinks that Jonathan will be beaten when he gets home.Allison thinks that Jonathans parents will just be happy that that he is still alive and will only be grounded for a little while. We also think that he is certainly having second thoughts. We love this book. |

MESSAGE:
Dear Reader, We like this book because of Avi's good authors craft. Some examples we liked were the metaphor on page 5 that said each stoke sliced away a piece of time and the similie on page 35 that said it slit through the air like the cutting edge of a blade. We also like how good Avi's adverbs are. Do you like the book? If so why?

MESSAGE:
Dear Readers, We have just read the part in the book about the beginning of the battle. Jonathan was feeling confident at the beginning, but when he had seen two people being taken down by the Hessians, he lost his confidence. In the book it says that his gun felt light at first, but then it began to feel heavy when he realized that war wasn't what he expected it to be. Some good words that we found in the last reading assignment are: linchpin which means, the pin that holds the axle to the wheel, plume, which is a feather on someone's hat, bayonets, which are the long knives on the end of fancy guns, and Grenadier, which is a person who belongs to a special regiment. What other words did you find?!

Dear Jessie and Sahar, Hi, I think Jonathan felt scared in the battle because all the people were geting killed. He was sad because he got separated from his men then he was all alone. In the begining he felt that he could handle the war. Then he saw killing around him and then he thoght he couldn't handle it.

MESSAGE:
Dear Jessie & Sahar, If I were in the battle like Jonathan. I would be scared. I would be scared because two men got shot. I would feel scared because I don't know how to survive in the woods alone. I would be scared because the Hessians are trying to kill me.

MESSAGE:
Dear Jamel, I think Jonathan will come close to killing someone, but he won't have enough guts to kill anyone. I can tell because he is so nervous he won't be able to pull the trigger. I think Jonathan's father will be a little proud because Jonathon is fighting in his first war, and a little angry beacuse his father told him not to fight. What do you think? |

MESSAGE:
Dear Jessie A. and Sahar B., I think that Jonathon should fight in the war, because the crew was short one person since John's father was wounded. I think Jonathon will see people getting hurt and maybe come face to face to kill someone from the Hessians. He might not like it and will be sad, but will still want to fight to gain pride. |
