Book Club Lesson Plan: The View from Saturday, Lesson 4

Comprehension:
Build Background; Characters and Character Maps

GOAL:
To build or review background knowledge on turtles; to review the concept of characters and character development; to construct a character map of Nadia Diamondstein

ASSIGNED READING:
Chapter 2, pp. 40-57

WRITING PROMPT:

  • Make a character map of Nadia Diamondstein. (Consider her relationships with Izzy and Margaret, her father, her dog, etc.)

  • What big decision did Nadia make regarding the turtles and turtle walks? Why did she made such a decision? How does Nadia follow through on this decision? What makes her act this way? What does this tell you about her as a person? Support your response.

    ONLINE PROMPT:
Use the Student Comment Form to share ideas and questions with your online peers. Check yesterday's Student Comments page to see if there are any comments you want to respond to.

  • Background Knowledge: Prior to today's reading would be a good time to do one of two things: Review what students learned from their inquiry projects on sea turtles or introduce background on sea turtles focusing on migration patterns off the Atlantic Coast. Think about: What species? Life cycles? Hatching of young? Difficulties?

  • Characters: Refer back to Lesson 2. Take as many opportunities to discuss the concept of characters with students as possible. This will enable them to think more deeply about the novels they are reading.

  • Possible thoughts for discussion in community share:

    1. Nadia said, "Inside of me there was a lot of best friendship that no one but Ginger was using" (p. 42). In what context did she say it? What does she mean? What does this tell you about Nadia?

    2. Nadia's father said, "And there will be times that you or I will need a lift between switches" (p. 57). In what context was this said? What is meant by this? Could you put yourself in this situation?
