  • How do teachers usually choose a class team for the Academic Bowl? Who was on Mrs. Olinski's team and how did she choose them? What difficulty did she have appointing all the members of her team? Why was it difficult for her? If you were the teacher, how would you choose your class team? What criteria (standards) would you use to make the decision? Why?

  • What kind of disturbance did Jared and Ham make in the classroom? How did Mrs. Olinski decide to handle it? What do you think the boys were expecting? Did Mrs. Olinski use good judgement? Why or why not? If you were Mrs. Olinski, what would you have done? Why? What other things could teachers do to help students obey classroom rules and regulations?

    ONLINE PROMPT:

  • Review with students that good readers continually move through different stages as they are reading. As they begin a book, or pick up a book where they had previously left off, they are "stepping in," or thinking about what they know to prepare themselves for the story. Another stage, "moving through," is where the reader gets "caught up in the story." The reader may even, in a sense, become involved in the "experience" in order to make better sense of the story. "Stepping back" is how the reader thinks about the story as a whole and adds his or her own knowledge and experiences. This allows the reader to think about the text in relation to his or her own life (Langer, pp. 16-18).

  • Acronyms: A word formed from the initial letters or groups of letters of words in a set phrase. For example, RADAR is an acronym for "RAdio Detection And Ranging." Ask students if they know of any other acronyms. Examples include:

    • NATO: North Atlantic Treaty Organization
    • SONAR: Sound Navigation and Ranging
    • NASA: National Aeronautics and Space Administration
    • LASER: Light Amplification by Stimulated Electron Radiation
    • ASAP: As Soon As Possible

  • Possible thoughts for discussion in community share:

    1. Mrs. Olinski also believes that Western Civilization is in a "state of decline." Why do you think so many characters believe this? Do you think people really believe that it is?

    2. Mrs. Olinski says that "Western Civilization is in a state of decline because people don't take the time to take tea at four o'clock" (p. 125). What do you think Mrs. Olinski feels about the "idea" of tea? Why?
