Hello! Welcome to our discussion of Shiloh! My name is Phoebe and I'll be reading your comments and sharing some comments of my own during our time together! Have you all read chapter 1? What do you think about Marty so far? You might want to start a character map to keep track of his most interesting traits as you read. That's what I'm going to do.

Hi! My name is Andy, and I'm going to be in on the discussion, too. I know I'm going to like this book because I LOVE animals. If you want to read more about me (and Phoebe, too), just click on the Book Reviews link at the top of this page and then click on the Meet our Reviewers link.

I have a question about something in the first chapter. What do you think Marty means when he says "Don't have to mark a dog to hurt him" ? I think I know what he means, and I agree with him!

Hi! My name is Holden. I am part of the discussion on Shiloh. So people, how do you like Shiloh so far? At first it was boring, but now it's exciting! I love the story line so far. I like how so far you've met so many characters. It could use a few more climax sections though. Talk to you next week. Holden

I think Shiloh is an ok book. I wish the book had an
adventure in it. I wonder if Marty will be able to keep
Shiloh? I think he will be able to keep the dog because
Judd is very mean to his dogs. I think the author should
add more description about the characters.

I liked this book. It was interesting, but I don't like how Marty talks. He isn't educated very well. I also don't think that Marty should disobey his parents. I wonder if Shiloh is actually Judd's dog or is he just saying that he is? Shiloh is the cutest dog I have ever seen.

I really think Shiloh is well trained but someone must have had Shiloh before Judd had him since Judd is so mean and too busy to train poor Shiloh. I think Shiloh is described to be helpless and VERY ADORABLE!!!!! This book has started out pretty interesting with all this adventure of hiding Shiloh in chapter 4.

Hello everone my name's Eric. I'd like to know what do you guys think about Shiloh. I think its got a good start after chapters 1, 2, 3 and 4 but it sometimes gets really boring. I think Shiloh is going to turn out intresting in the end. What do you think?

Hi everyone, this book is very interesting. Shilo is the funniest because of how the characters talk. I think the book needs a little more description because I don't even know what Marty looks like. I think Marty has a lot of hair and he's short.

Hi. My name's Nathan. I understand what Marty means by saying that you don't have to mark a dog to hurt him. Dogs have feelings, too. You can hurt a dog by not feeding it or by yelling bad dog. I just got a dog. He's 1 and we think that the people who took care of him before were bad to him and scolded him a lot. He cowers a lot.

I agree with Marty's phrase, "Don't have to mark a dog to hurt him" because even though you aren't physically injuring a dog you CAN break it's self esteem by yelling. Dogs understand a lot more than we give them credit for. For example, one of my dogs flattens his ears against his head whenever we tell him not to do something. We think he was abused by his former owners because he cringes when somebody yells. (They don't even have to be yelling at him.)

Thanks for answering my question! I agree with you--that dogs have feelings and that they understand a lot more than people think they do. I really like the character of Marty because he's so sensitive to Shiloh's feelings. He really respects Shiloh and knows in his heart that the dog deserves a better life than the one he has with Judd Travers.

What does everyone else think?

Thanks for your comments! I'm glad you are hopeful that the book will be interesting. I'm looking forward to finding out what happens to Marty and Shiloh!

One student mentioned Marty's dialect, or particular way of speaking. I think it's interesting that people have all different ways of using the same language, depending on where they are from. Most people notice other people's dialects more than they notice their own. I think the author uses dialect to make the charcters seem realistic. What are some good examples of this in the book? Do you like that she uses dialect?

We just got started on the book today, and everyone loves it. We think the dialect is a little strange, but it makes the story seem more realistic.
