| To: Everyone Hi! Happy Tuesday. To everyone who was here yesterday –welcome back. To new people–welcome to the Shiloh discussion! Maybe today we can talk a little more about Marty. Those of you new to the discussion might want to check out what we said yesterday. Then add your own ideas! |

| To: Everyone Hi! Maybe we can also talk about some of the conflicts in the novel so far. What conflicts lead to other conflicts? |

| From: Nathan Grade 4 Kuhns Home School Alexandria, VA | To: everybody I think that if Marty finds Shiloh again he'll try to hide him and give him food. His parents won't let him keep Shiloh so the only thing he can do is give him back to Judd or hide him. He won't give him back to Judd because he saw him kicking Shiloh. |

| From: Eben Grade 8 C.L.K. Elementary Calumet, MI | To: Everyone The conflicts in this book are, so far, both internal and external. The internal conflict is a battle in which Marty is fighting against his fears to stand up for Shiloh. That leads to the external conflict where there is a constant arguement with his Dad about whether Judd should keep the dog. |

| To: Nathan I agree with you, Nathan. It would be very hard for Marty to give the dog back to Judd. Hiding him might seem like a good idea. We'll have to see what happens . . . |

| To: Eben Great answer, Eben. I have a feeling Marty's internal and external conflicts are far from over. What do you think? |

| From: Mrs. Samples' Class Grade 4 Herod Elementary Houston, TX | To: Everyone We read chapter 2 today and started our character map of Marty. We also read the comments from yesterday and we agree that it is a very very good book. We really like Shiloh and we hate Judd because he is a mean old person that spits tobacco (ugh!) and he kicked poor little Shiloh. We know Marty really wants Shiloh but he belongs to someone else. | From: Eben Grade 8 Kuhns Home School Alexandria, VA | To: Andy Yes, I think he will come across a lot more conflicts that will grow from the others. I think he could get into arguments with Judd - even physical ones. I think he's going to have to lie to his parents. Plus, I think his decisions will effect his family. |

| To: Mrs. Samples' class Thanks for your comments! I'm glad you like the book. It's cool that you started your character map of Marty. Let us know what you discover about his personality as you read. Judd certainly isn't my favorite person either. I would feel terrible if I were in Marty's shoes–watching Judd kick Shiloh. I wonder if Marty will be able to help Shiloh. |
