Hi! Thanks for all those great comments yesterday! I'm going to start the discussion today with two questions:

What do Marty's actions and words tell you about him?

What do you learn about Marty's parents from what they say and do?

I agree with you. I think Judd is a mean person and deserves to fall into some sort of abyss. I hope he gets punished at the end of the story.

Hi,
I think that Marty will end up with Shiloh not Judd. Do you think Marty will end up with Shiloh? I wonder if Judd will even end up with any dogs at all.

Hi,
I think that Judd is going to end up with no dogs at all because I think that they all will run away. I think that since he treats them so poorly that they will either run,or die from being kicked or from starvation. I also think that maybe the animal control will take the dogs and put them in the Humane Society,or whatever they had back then. What do you think will happen to the dogs? Do you think that they will die in their condition?

We agree with you.
How do you think Marty will get the money to buy Shiloh? We think that Marty will make a deal with Judd. He will work for Judd, cleaning his yard, but instead of getting money he will work until he gets Shiloh. We think he will pick up cans, too.

I think Marty's actions and words tell you that he cares for animals. He wanted to make sure the rabbit they had for dinner was shot dead without any suffering. He also said he would never shoot an animal with his rifle.

Hi, Do you think that Marty should be able to keep Shiloh? We think he should be able to. Marty takes better care of Shiloh, and he doesn't kick him. Judd doesn't treat Shiloh well, so if Shiloh comes back to Marty, we think he should keep him.

I think Judd Doesn't name his dogs because he is too dumb and mean to think of names. When people don't name their animals I think of mean people. He doesn't think of them as pets he only thinks of them as huntinng dogs and things to kick at.What do you think?

We had a good discussion today about why Judd doesn't name his dogs. There were lots of ideas: he can just whistle, so why call them by a name; if he doesn't name them and one dies, he won't be sad; he might not be able to remember all those names; -- we tried a lot of ideas. We finally decided that Judd just thinks of his dogs as "things," not as friends, so why name them, any more than you would name a tale or a chair that you owned. We talked about how our special animals -- even stuffed animals, have names that show we love them. We were wondering what Judd does love -- really love? Does he like himself?
