I don't know what I would do if I were in Marty's position. That's a tough one. I think I would probably do everything I could to protect Shiloh. It's interesting that Marty is always thinking so carefully about right and wrong. He takes everything he does very seriously, don't you think? I admire him for this. What does everyone else think?

Andy's comment reminds me of something: my character map of Marty. I'm going to add some new information based on what I've read. What kinds of details have you learned about Marty in your reading? Has your opinion of him (or anyone else in the book) changed since you started reading?

My views on Marty's mother have changed. Before she didn't seem that important but now I keep on thinking what will she do now that she knows. It surprised me that when she found Shiloh she said she wouldn't tell Marty's father. I was surprised that she started out mad and then began to pat Shiloh.

That's interesting. I agree with you. Like Marty, she knows it's wrong to lie, but she can't resist wanting to help poor Shiloh. I wonder what will happen!

One person who I've changed my mind about is Marty's mom. His mom seemed very strict to me in the early chapters of the book. She seemed so when she scolded Marty for not eating his food or when she warned him to change his clothes or risk pneumonia. She's kinder and more understanding now that she knows how Marty feels. I believe she is strict but can be understanding, as well.

Good point! It is nice seeing this other side to Marty's mom. She certainly has a tough job; she has to feed a whole family with limited resources, be understanding, AND try to teach good values.
