I think the Nazi's will come to their apartment because the next
chapter is "Who Is the Dark Haired Girl?" and the soldiers are probably
the ones who are asking who the dark haired girl is. Ellen has
dark hair, but the Nazis will believe that Ellen is Annemarie's sister.

Then when the Nazis came it was very scary and suspenseful. We had more ideas, but can't write them all. Anyway, who do you think Great-aunt Birte is?

To Candace J. @ Mata Inter. Houston,TX: We completely agree. When we read Chapter 5, we were very worried about Ellen and Annemarie's safety. Annemarie was holding Ellen's necklace and the Star of David became imprinted on her hand. If the Nazis saw it they might have taken her instead. It gets better and better each chapter.

I really do agree with you. The reason I think mama took them to uncle Henricks is to get away from the soliders. It was really good that all of them went. It was very smartthat mama talked them into going. That was very smart and good that they did'nt go to school for there safety.

In chapter 6 my most suspenceful moment was when they were in the train and. You did'nt know what Kristi was going to say to a solider but it's good that she did'nt say anything like "this is Ellen and this is her New Years".My favorite part was when they were on there way to uncle Henricks house and they kept on talking about what they were seeing lij=ke the castle and the Deer park.

We also felt worried when we were on Chapter 5. We are now on Chapter 15. When the imprint of the Star of David was on Annemarie, we thought it would give the secret away. What do you think about Kirsti? Tim thinks she is like his 7 year old sister. She is smart, and if someone gets in her way she pushes them out.

Dear Richard P. from .C.P. Smith Elem Burlington VT.

I am responding to a question you asked about why the war is going on.
I am pretty sure that the Germans think that they are better than everyone else and so they have decided to conquer the countrys that they can capture.
Denmark is one of those countrys. Also they hate Jews and want to rid the world of anyone who believes that way.

MESSAGE:
Casey: I think that they are bringing Ellen to Annemarie's uncle's house
because they will send Ellen to Sweden. You can see Sweden from
Uncle Henrik's house, and Sweden is free from the Nazis. Do you
think so?

Kate: I think the most suspenseful part in Chapter 6 was when Kirsti
was almost going to tell the Nazis that it was Ellen's New Year,
but she said she is going to visit her uncle's house and she showed
the soldiers her shiny black shoes.

Eliza: My favorite part is at the end of Chapter 5 when Annemarie
imprinted the Star of David in her hand, and then when they
traveled to the ocean. Why? Because I am studying and gitting a
Bible, and I love the outdoors. I think Mrs. Johansen is taking
them because the Nazis are suspicious that Ellen is the Rosen's girl.
What will happen next?

Do you think Chapter 6 was exciting? We don't think it was, except
when Kirsti said, "Guess what? We are going to see my Uncle Henrik's
and I have new shoes!" We thought for sure she was going to say
that it was Ellen's New Year because she's Jewish!
Do you think Chapter 5 was exciting? WE DO! We were nervous
and we thought it was suspensful, and also kind of sad because
the soldier ripped Lise's picture. That might have been the only
picture of Lise as a baby. The soldier probably ripped the picture
because he was mad. He was sure Ellen wasn't their kid, but they
had (fake) proof.

MESSAGE:
In our book club we talked about what we thought about what we
would do if we were Kirsti's mother and you could tell she was
about to tell the soldiers that Ellen was Jewish. Douglas said
that kids Kirsti's age can be easily distracted. He might just
start talking about something totally different, and Kirsti would
quit chatting about Ellen. Kevin thought about what his mom
would do. Maybe she would interrupt Kirsti quickly and tell her to stop
being so chatty. Claire had this idea: If Kirsti let out the
secret, Claire would just say that Kirsti was pretending and
playing house, like little kids like to do.

If you were
Kirsti's mom, how would you be sure that Kirsti would keep the secret?
Would it be better to let her know that they are hiding Ellen to
keep her safe, or is it better that Kirsti not know anything?

We have some questions:

Do you think that the Nazis will figure out that Ellen is not
the Johansen's daughter? If you do, then how long do you think
it will take them?

Do you think Ellen will get her parents back soon?

In Chapter 6 we thought that the most suspenseful part was when the Nazis
come on the train and when we had to find out if Kirsti would say if
Ellen was a friend. What do you think was the most suspenseful part
in Chapter 6?
