MESSAGE:
In chapter five my favorite part is when the soldiers come to Annemarie's house because the Rosens are missing from their apt. That is because the Rosens are Jewish, and the Nazis are trying to arrest all the Jewish people in Denmark. Ellen has to stay at Annemarie's house because it will be safe for Ellen. Ellen has to pretend to be Annemarie's sister,Lise, when the German soldiers come.

To:Everyone On capter 5 ,Who is the dark Haired One?, I felt sad because they were talking about Lise and how she died. But after that I felt scared because the 3 soldiers came to there house and woke both the girls and Ellen had a necklace of the star of David on and she almost didn't get it off before they got out of bed. And also because now the 3 soldiers suspect Ellen because of her dark hair. |

I think chapter 5 was the most exciting chapter yet.And I think it was cool that Lise had dark hair just like Ellen nad it was smart for Annemaries dad to pull out the picture of Lise for proof that Ellen was the daughter. What would you have done if Germen soldiers came in your house? What would you say? |

I think King Christian did the right thing when he surrendered the Nazis because a lot of people would have died trying to fight the Nazis. They are better off just living with soldiers. I also thought the story Mr. Johanson told was great. I think it was true. I do think the people of Denmark will protect there king. I think the story is funny too because of the way the soldier acted after the young man said that. |

We just read chapters 1,2,3,and 4. I am really enjoying this book so far because it is very interesting. I like Kirsti a lot because she has such a free-spirit. She doesn't let anyone tell her what to do. I like Annemarie because she is very kind and she is a good friend and older sister. I think Ellen is a lot like me because she is very shy and timid. Are you like any of the characters in the story? Do you think it was wise for King Christian to surrender to the German's? I think he did it because he was trying to protect Denmark from all of the fighting so I think it was wise. Do you? Do you think any soldiers will come to the Johansen's apartment? I do and I think they will look to see if the Johansens' are hiding and Jewish people in their home. What do you think? |

Why do u think that this chapter is called "It Will Be A Long Night?"I think that sometime in this book Ellen will be captured by the Nazis .Do u? |

I have read chapters 1 through 4 and I think this is a very catchy book because it makes you want to keep reading on. The way chapter 4 finished was really hard to stop and our teacher said she would prefer us to stop at those few chapters so we would not get confused in our class discussion. I'm really anchess to know if the Nazis come or not Chapter5 is named "Who is the dark haired one?", and at the end of chapter 4 the last few sentences talk about Annemarie's blonde hair and Ellen's dark curly hair. I think the Nazi will come but be a little suspicious but then just leave. Next, I think it is really nice of Annemarie to be willing to save her best friend's life, which is just like something I would do if my family or friends were in danger and needed any sort of help I would put my life on risk to save their life. Do you think Annemarie would save Ellen from the soldiers? |

Hi,we just came back from spring break and we finished reading the first four chapters in the Numbers of the Stars. In Chapter 2 I think that King Christian did the right thing when he surrendered to the Nazis because he knew that such a little country could not defeat such a big enemy. Also he knew that they only had a few soldiers to defend Copenhagen, so even if they did fight they probably would not win and they might even capture King Christian and kill him, even if there are guards guarding him.Would you die to protect the leader of your country? |

I think the first chapters of this story is interesting. I am just on the edge of my seat to see what will happen next! I don`t think Kirsti should have talked back to that soldier, but on the other hand she didn`t know better because they were just a part of the landscape to her. I hope that Ellen will be safe with Annemarie`s family. I would be so frightened if a soldier talked to me. Wouldn`t you. |

Jahnessa, Maricarr, Cynthia, In chapter 5 i was really nervous because the soldiers came and Ellen was there. I thought that ANnemarie's father did a good thing by ripping the picture out of Lise. I also thought that Annemarie was a smart thinker because right when the soldiers were going to come in she yanked it off. I was so scared at first. WEren't you? Also in chapter six i thought that kirsti was goign to blurt out that Ellen was a jew and it was her new year but instead she talked about her shoes. I wonder what will happen at uncle henrik's house. I think the soldiers are going to be suspenseful that Ellen is gone and so is Kirsti, mamma and ANeemarie. Don't you. |

Nicole, I like chapter one because when they were walking home from school they ran into two soldiers when they were racing. I don't like Kristi very much though. I don't understand completely why Ellen and Annmarie were scared of the soldiers because they are on every corner and they should be used to it. And if my friend were in trouble like that and were Jewish and getting relocated, I would risk my life to save theirs. I agree with that because they are your friends, and you would try to do everything you possibly could, well, almost. |
