I think that King Christian did the right thing when he surrendered to the soldiers because if he attempted war Denmark might be destroyed and be totally ruled by the Nazi soldiers.I also think that it was wise of the Danes to destroy their own naval fleet because if the Nazis conquered the Danes then they would take all of their ships and use them against the Danes. That is a huge advantage! |

To:Taylor Gillaspia I agree with you about chapter 5 being suspensful. I think the soldier cared that Ellen's hair was black because everybodys hair in the Johansen family was probably some type of blonde and Ellen was the only person there that had black hair. Yes, I did think Annemarie was sad when she saw the imprint of the Star of David on her hand. When the soldiers came didn't you think it was smart of Annemarie to take the Star of David necklace off of Ellen.I did. |

Why do you think Mrs.Johansen took Ellen and Annemarie to Gilleje? Was it because she wanted to keep Ellen safe or was it because Annemarie thought her mom took her and Ellen over to Uncle Henrik's house so they could be safe and he could probably take care of Ellen? I think its both because remember in chapter 7 in the last paragraph and last sentence Annemarie said,"Say that we brought a friend".Well theres your big clue in your small sntence.- Sophia |

To Ashley Y.- I agree that chapter 5 was exciting. I liked the way Annemarie took charge of Ellen when the soldiers came. It was as if she had been planning it for days! For example, as soon as she heard the soldiers, she dived for the bed and took Ellen's nechlace off! I also thought Papa was very clever to have thought of getting the baby photos of Lise, Annemarie, and Kirsti, and how he tore the date off of Lise's photo. For some reason, I feel that the Johansens' did not convince the soldier that Ellen was Lise. I think the soldiers will come back to the apartment again. What do you think? |

Here at Pattiosn Elementary, my 5th grade reading class and I have just finished reading chapter 8~ There has been a death. I personally thought that it was boring, but it also gave me many thoughts about who had died. In the chapter before, chapter 7, when it said that Uncle Henrik wasn't home I thought that he had drowned in the water while either fishing or sialing. It made me even think harder because when I had finished reading chapter 7 the next chapter was called~There has been a death. Did you evere think that Uncle Henrik might be the person who was killed? |

Dear Anonymous: I liked Chapter 5 because it was suspensful. It was clever of the father ripping the pictures from the photo album so the date didn't show, only the actual picture and the name. And that was quick thinking of Annmarie (the made-up person) to yank off Ellen's Star of David necklace. And if someone sees this, try writing back to me. |

I think it is so cruel just to kill people because they are Jewish. they shouldn`t have the right to hunt them down like dogs. |

DON'T YOU THINK? iF YOU DON'T WRITE BACK AND TELL ME WHAT YOU THINK. IN CHAPTER 8 THEY TALKED ABOUT AUNT BIRTE IT WAS KIND OF WIERD BECASUE IT SOUNDED TO ME AS IF THERE REALLY WASN'T A GREAT AUNT BIRTE AND THAT MAMMA AND UNCLE HENRIK WERE LYING. ANNEMARIE ALSO HAD MEMORIZID ALL HER MAMMA'S RELATIVES ANS UNCLES ANS AUNTS. ALSO ANOTHER REASON WHY I THINK MAMMA AND UNCLE HENRIK ARE LYING IS BECAUSE THE NEXT CHAPTER IS CALLED WHY ARE YOU LYING? whAT DO THINK IS GOING TO HAPPEN IN CHPTER 9? I THINK THAT ELLEN AND ANNEMARIE ARE GOIN TO FIND OUT THAT GREAT AUNT BIRTE IS A FAKE PERSON AND THEY ARE GOIN TO TAKE UNCLE HENRIK'S BOAT AND SAIL TO SWEEDEN THE LAND RIGHT ACROSS FROM DENMARK. pLeAsE rIgHt BaCk |

How do you think Ellen feels when she explores Gilleleje with Annemarie? I think she feel amazed and overwhelmed because it is all new to her and she probably hasn't seen anything like it before in her life. How would you feel if you were Ellen in Gilleleje?
