From: Christopher Paul Curtis - Author	To: Cory in Mi Some of the characters are patterened after people I knew, I think it would be very difficult to write a book and not have at least the flavor of your friends and acquaintances in it. Both of my parents are from Grand Rapids, Mi. The only chapter that is written exactly as it happened to me is Chapter 5-Nazi Parachutes.

When I say "based on," I don't mean it actually happened like it did in the story. Writer's always change details and events to make the story more interesting or to make the events fit into what is happening. Unfortunately I think teasing and making fun of people who are different is way too common. We need to try to understand how it feels to be picked on all of the time and if we are guilty of doing it we need to check ourselves. OK, enough preaching for the day!!!

If you were bad you get whipped or thrown in the dirt cellar depending on severity of the parent. So Yes, I do think that Byron deserved it all.

How about you? I think that he deserved what he got. He picked on people and stole things so I am glad that Byron whooped his butt. He deserved it. I don't think bullies have a good sense of humor because a bully is supposed to be tough and if you are laughing and joking around, you wouldn't be considered a bully. Not in my book anyways. I can't believe Byron didn't run away when Momma was going to burn him. He must have been horrified, that's why he stayed. He was froze to the seat in a sense. Momma really means what she says. She kept her word to God and she punished Byron. I'm suprised that he didn't choke to death, the way that she dragged him down the stairs by his neck. That has got to be child abuse, but in the 60's I guess it was considered normal to beat kids, so why would it be different with choking kids. I wouldn't be able to stand it, letting someone burn or whip me! I think the author uses her behavior, actions, and dialogue to show Momma's traits. I don't think that "Daddy Cool" is really cool because he spent the money on his junk food and killed the pidgeon, that's just mean. How would he like it if someone was throwing stuff at him?! I would have told Mamma and Dad about Byron because he was spending the families money for his own personal pleasure. How rude! Momma and Dad will probably ground Byron and make him work to pay for the food when they find out.
From: Angie Grade 7 Marshall Middle School Marshall, WI	I in chapter 3, Kenny tried to solve the problem first by telling Rufus he was sorry for laughing at him. It didn't work verry well. Kenny's mother tried to help by waiting at the bus stop. The book talkes about angels when Rufus gets on the bus and kenny thinks that he is his personal savior. In Chapter 4, I felt sorry for Larry Dunn only when By was being mean to him,(durring the Great Carp Escape) when by was getting Kenny's gloves back he deserved it. I think Kenny and Rufus are good friends because of when kenny gave Rufus his other glove. I think the only time bullies are funny is when they are just 'teasin and the other person isn't hurt.

She turned into a snake woman Kenny said. I think Byron doesn't run awaybecause he is too afraid of what momma will do to him whem he gets back. The autor created humor when he turned momma into a snake woman. it made the chapter more interesting. In chapter 6 If i was kenny I would prably do just what Kenny did.

I thought it was funny when Byron got his lips stuck to the mirror on the car and they couldn't get his lips off the mirror. I also thought the chapter when Byron lit the parachute over the toliet and he got caught by his mom and almost got his finger burned!In Bud not Buddy I thought it was cool when Bud got stung by the hornets and played a trick on the family that he was staying with! I also thought it was sad when Hermon E. Calloway found out that his daughter had ran away from him whenshe was a kid because he was too tough on him. When are you coming out with a great book, Iwould be sure to read it. You are my favorite author and I hope you keep on writing great books!

I think that in chaqpter 4 to come to school with wearing only soaks is pretty bad. I mean to wear soaks as mights as gloves can tell you that there family can be in money troubles. With Kenny giving Rufus his gloves is a pretty strong friendship forming. I was glade that the author had used real problems back in the 70s'.
