Book Club Lesson Plan:
Writing Good Online Comments

Below are some sample comments about the book Shiloh. Read the comments and think about how you would react to each one if it were part of an online discussion. Would you find the comment interesting? Would you want to write back? Think about what makes a good comment, and then try to make yours as good as they can be!

Comment 1 My group and I thought that chapters 3 and 4 of Shiloh was really interesting. We thought that Judd might really be mistreating Shilo and that Marty should return Shiloh but then again he should not. What do you think?

Comment 2 I think that shiloh is really smart. I think that shiloh has a right to run away.

Comment 3 My group thinks that Marty is a good person because he likes taking care of animals instead of hurtinn them. We also talked about that if a dog folloed you home what would you do with it? I said that I would keep it and take care of it. What would you do with the dog?

Comment 4 I thought that it was kind of sad and kind of happy.

Comment 5 We talk about Mr. Judd treating Shiloh, and how marty will get Shiloh.

Comment 6 I noticed from the begining that there is a Virginia Dialect. If I were Shiloh I would trust Marty to take care of me. Would you? Do you think Judd was telling the truth when he told Marty's father that Shiloh was his? I think Marty is caring for animals. Marty is a nice person.

Comment 7 Yes I do think that Marty will try to help Shiloh. I think he will build a house or somthing like that

Comment 8 Do you think that Jud is going to kill Shiloh if he runs awy egen? Do you think that Jud is treting Shiloh farly?

Comment 9 How do you thimk Judd feels when he finds out that Marty is keeping Shiloh from him. How do you think Shiloh feels while being in the house with evrybody. I think Marty will do something to keep Marty from Judd. What do you think. How would you feel if you were in Marty's posistion.

Comment 10 Emily, I think Judd would feel mad and disapointed that Marty has Shiloh, because everybody knew Marty had Shiloh exepect him. Also Judd might feel very angry that Marty even had Shiloh. I think Shiloh feels very nice staying with Marty because they treat him very well.We also think he feels well because he is not with Judd.Shiloh feels nice because nobody loved Shiloh the way Marty does right now.Everybody agrees in my group that Shiloh is happy!!!

Comment 11 Marty's actions and words tell me that he cares deeply about Shiloh and he dose not like for animals to get hurt,suffer or be treated badly. He cares about his family and other people too. Judd's actions and words tell me that he does not care about Shiloh or other dogs. What do you think????

Comment 12 I thought that Marty was very brave when he stood up to Judd. It's hard for kids to do that to adults, especially a mean adult. He said he would do anything to protect Shiloh. I don't know if I could be that brave. What do you think?
